The Best Songs You've Never Heard... "Tigi"

Reviewing and sharing global music that you need to know! The first edition features Swaziland's very own Sands, who has a jam that you deserve to get stuck in your head...

If you live in South Africa or Swaziland, this is not a revelation, You have probably already listened to "Tigi" twice today. But for everyone else in the world, check this song out. Sands is a Swazi musician, he primarily sings in the SiSwati language, sometimes in English. Being from the states, I realize that many people don't dabble very far into music that is not sung in English, perhaps Spanish is as far as you have ventured.

“The bass drum hits and involuntary head nodding takes over you.”

Wait for the hook...

You don't need to wait long, the second you hear the opening synth it has already started to get you. So simple, so infectious! The bass drum kicks and involuntary head nodding takes over you. As the rest of the beat drops in, its groove time. When Sands starts to croon, you notice the crisp clarity to his voice. He is singing, but you can't make out the words.

My man Sands is not singing in English here, but his native tongue from Swaziland, SiSwati. He is singing about someone who plays bad when they play with your heart and your feelings, when they say they love you. The hook, "inhlitiyo yami shaya tigi gigi, tigi tigi gigi" basically translates that his heart is beating or shouting out. "Tigi" is like the thud of your heart beat in a sense.

Sands has a great voice, he wrote a killer song and you need to give it a listen. Before the song is through you will be singing that hook, "tigi tigi gigi"! When I need to liven up a road trip through Swaziland, this is on the playlist. You can't deny the talent of this kid as "Tigi" took South Africa by storm like no other Swazi has done before him. Just writing this piece got the song stuck in my head again!

Now, go be the cool kid and drop a fresh Swazi track on your friends and take full credit for discovering this hot jam! You're welcome. Just remember to keep up with Swazipond for more music tips and to find the best songs you have never heard!

Enjoy your first listen...
